Coach Dan here with another no-nonsense relaxation technique for you stressed out chuckleheads. Today we’re talking about progressive muscle relaxation, or PMR for short.
Now for those of you skimming while scratching your asses, PMR is a technique to unwind tight muscles and relax your mind. It works by flexing each muscle group as hard as you can for a count of 5, then letting go totally to feel the difference between tense and loose. By doing your whole body from feet to face, it teaches you what fully unwinding feels like. It’s simple, requires no props or apps, and you can do it anywhere, even in your car before marching into the lion’s den.
Here’s how it goes down:
- First off, find yourself a quiet spot, somewhere you can stretch out and not get bothered.
- Next, get comfortable and focus on your breathing. Breathe in through that nose, feel your gut expand, then exhale out through your mouth. Nice and slow. Keep doing that for a minute or two, and let that mind of yours chill.
- Now, we’re gonna tense and relax those muscles, group by group. Start with your feet – curl those toes up tight, squeeze those muscles for about 5-10 seconds, then release and let ’em go loose for 15-20 seconds. Feel that difference? That’s what we’re going for.
- Work your way up – calves, thighs, butt, abs, chest, back, shoulders, arms, hands, neck, and face. With each group, tense it up hard for a few seconds, then let it all go and bask in that sweet, sweet relaxation.
- Once you’ve hit all the groups, do it again from the feet up. Repetition is key, my friends.
After that second cycle, take some more deep breaths and just let your whole body go limp. You should be feeling looser than a wet noodle right about now.
The more you practice this PMR technique, the better you’ll get at recognizing tension and letting it all melt away. It’s like a massage for your mind and muscles, and it’s all natural – no need for any of those “mindfulness” apps or “guided meditation” nonsense.
Give it a shot, and you’ll be relaxing like a champ in no time.
